Restaurant Beer Garden German Openings Westport Beer Rothbard Ale + Larder, European Beer Bar, To Open In Westport (By Walrus + Carpenter Team) Stephanie Webster July 28, 2015 Walrus + Carpenter owners, Adam Roytman and Joseph Farrell, are teaming up again with a new restaurant concept in downtown Westport. This new venture, housed in the cozy subterranean dining space that was once Tierrra, will maintain the casual neighborhood vibe diners have grown accustomed to at Walrus, but this duo will leave the BBQ in Black Rock and head to Europe for a completely different approach to comfort food. Westport has its first European Beer Bar (right by Old Town Hall). Rothbard Ale + Larder will open this fall with a menu focused on Central European fare. Rothbard will draw inspiration from the cuisines of Alsace, Germany, Belgium and Switzerland, with a little Northern Italy thrown in for good measure. A preview of the menu in progress reveals specialties including Spatzle, Mussels, Rabbit Goulash, Steak Frites (Fleisher’s), housemade Jagershnitzel and Raclette, (a Swiss cheese, melted table side and draped over potatoes, bacon and onions). Hearty fare will be complimented by more delicate salads and fish entrees. “There will be something for everyone” says Roytman. Farrell and Roytman are particularly enthusiastic about the “For The Table,” section of the menu where diners can order entrees for 4, in the communal spirit of a true beer hall. When we asked these two why Westport, Adam quickly responds, “We really just loved this space to be honest. I’ve had my eye on this location for a long time.” In fact, Adam has gotten so excited about about the concept that he is stepping back into the kitchen at Rothbard Ale + Larder to take on the role of executive chef. “This concept and this food is so in my wheelhouse. It’s the food I’ve always been most drawn to,” says Roytman. “In terms of the beverage program, we are going to dig deep into Bavarian and Belgian beer, says Farrell. “We will have some large format beer, French ciders, as well as Austrian, Alsatian and Croatian wines.” In terms of attitude, Rothbard will feel just like Walrus + Carpenter, a neighborhood eatery that seems to have been there forever, and always feels just shy of a laid back party. Warm colors, rustic wood, stone and plush leather will define this uber comfortable interior. With about 60 seats inside, a private dining room, and room for 30 guests on the outdoor patio, Westport is poised for an exciting new restaurant opening.CTbites will keep you posted on the opening date later this summer, and update our readers with photos as the restaurant undergoes its renovation.
