CTbites Team

In an era of big box shopping, Walter Stewart’s Market is a breath of fresh (and gourmet) air. A fixture in downtown New Canaan since 1907,  this family run grocery features a great selection of everyday needs for your family, as well as the kind of customer service rarely seen these days. But Walter Stewart's offers so much more than your average grocer.

At Walter Stewart’s you can find artisanal goods from local producers and farms throughout the store, while hard to find specialty goods can be seen in every aisle.  And let’s not forget Stewart’s Spirits. This is a market where the butcher really does know your name, and sushi chefs are waiting to prepare you the perfect dinner. Enjoy your shopping experience and the season at Walter Stewart’s with St. Patty’s, Passover, Easter Goods and a whole lot more.

Walter Stewart’s Market is ready for the holidays with a selection of Easter Candies & Chocolates that will make any child or adult excited for the Easter bunny. Festive foiled eggs, bunnies, baskets and beans are waiting to be picked up, from brands you love, including Lake Champlain, Neuhaus, Bissingers, Seattle Chocolates, Fran’s, and Thomsons.

What’s Easter without the Easter Ham? Walter Stewart’s always carries a great selection of meats including organic, grass fed, and hard to find cuts, but wait till you see the Easter hams from Vermont Smoke & Cure Maple Brined Hams and D’Artagnan. Any of these will make your guests hungry for the holidays.

For Passover...Walter Stewart’s has Certified Angus Beef “First Cut” Beef Briskets for Passover that would make any bubbie proud.

Walter Stewart’s has dessert covered as well. Try one of Pascaline’s made Tea Breads, Fruit Tarts, or Irish Soda Bread. They are baked just around the corner in Westport CT.  Also new at Walter Stewart’s are “With Love from the Cupboard’s” French Macarons. These light as air fashionable beauties can be found in the bakery, and also make for wonderful hostess gift.

If you are entertaining this season, you may want to pick up one of Brooklyn Slate Co. Cheese Boards, a personal favorite for any table. These slate boards have a distinctive natural surface for serving cheeses and hors d'oeuvres. Each is sourced from their family quarry in upstate New York, each cheese board is packaged with a burlap bag alongside soapstone chalk and anti-slip padded feet.

And how better to feature your beautiful new cheese delivery system than with some locally made cheese. Walter Stewart’s has some great artisanal finds from Woodcock Farm Cheeses (Weston, VT) where an award winning farmstead selections such as: Summer Snow, a luscious sheep’s milk Camembert style;  Timberdoodle, American Cheese Society Award Winning Havarti style cow/sheep blend (* Stewart’s Spirits pairing: ‘06 Bodegas Beronia Rioja Reserva); Humble Pie, with a soft creamy texture and delicate milky flavor, as well as Cloud 9, an all cows’ milk Camembert style that has a rich and creamy texture and a mushroom finish.

Pair any of these cheeses with a bottle of wine or beer from Stewart’s Spirits. They are always happy to help match up the right flavor profiles for you.
