Crazy Taco-Mex Food Truck: Great Carnitas Taco

Jeff "jfood" Schlesinger

The food truck craze continues and I visited Crazy Taco-Mex. The simply decorated truck includes a Sombrero with the rim in the shape of a handlebar moustache. The menu includes Tacos ($3.50) Quesadillas ($6), and Burritos ($7). I was interested in Tacos and ordered three, a steak, a carnitas and a chicken. The menu states that each is topped with onions, cilantro and salsa verde.

The three tacos were stuffed into a rectangular Styrofoam container with a small container of the salsa verde served in a very small plastic container. This was not a good first impression, almost as if they did not care about the end product.

I first tasted a bit of the salsa verde, it had a nice kick to it. I next squirted a little lime on the carnita taco and I set my expectations to the minimum. The first bite changed my mind. It was delicious. The pork was moist and flavorful and the tortillas were soft with a touch of sweetness. I added a little of the salsa verde and it was even better. This was a great truck taco.

This enthusiasm was short lived. The steak taco was next. The meat was overcooked, tough and unseasoned. The only way that I could eat the taco was adding some of the salsa verde. The chicken was next and I was hoping for a repeat of the carnitas, unfortunately it was a twin of the beef, overcooked and bland. Again, the lime and the salsa verde were required.

Overall I loved the carnitas, the tortillas were outstanding but the beef and the chicken were not in the same league.
