On the cusp of Memorial Day, Chris Messina, GM at Stamford’s Harlan Social, has recreated classic cocktails, re-inventing them with culinary flair for Summer 2016. Mint Julep becomes a Tokyo Julep, shaken with Buffalo Trace bourbon, basil mint syrup, yuza, a splash of ginger beer, and a garnish of candied ginger. Death in the Afternoon, a tribute daiquiri to Hemingway, features 5 Year Real McCoy rum, Velvet Falernum, Luxardo, and a Jello square. The “Dirty Pickle,” transforms a dirty martini into a summer sipper, garnished with pickled veggies. Chris infuses vodka with Earl Grey tea, adds lemonade and more tea to salute summer with his Drunken Palmer. For a kick, try the explosive Red Tail powered by a Thai chili, and for a surprise, ask for Messina’s delicious take on a Bloody Mary.
