Plenty of buttery claw and tail meat is packed into a buttered, griddled New England style roll. The homemade ice cream, butter lathered lobster rolls, and topping loaded hot dogs at Heibeck’s Stand all made their season debut a few weeks late, but the popular Route 7 roadside gem is back in action. The delay in their opening is due to the obvious COVID-19 climate. Like many restaurants, Heibeck’s took the extra time to work out how to open as a takeout-only model with online or call ahead ordering and to put even more sanitation measures in place. “We definitely took a step back in our opening to make sure we were ready,” says general manager Rachel Williams. “We love our customers, and our main concern was to make sure they’re safe and comfortable.” Rachel Williams (general manager) and Skylar Smith (co-owner) rocking takeout orders on Heibeck’s opening day. Williams also mentioned that Heibeck’s took additional time to properly mark where walk-up traffic should flow and social distancing markers once in line at the windows to help ensure customer safety. Entrance, for now, is through the parking lot in back, then let the arrows and signs guide you from there. Ordering in person and via web or phone is a breeze. To Heibeck’s regulars, noticeably absent will be their charming, pet friendly, BYOB dining patio that is usually decked out with tables, chairs, flowers, greenery, and string lights. Where folks would normally go to kick back and devour a cup of Deep Purple Cow or Trash Can ice cream, is now mostly empty. “It was sad not putting out the furniture and plants,” says co-owner Barbara Heibeck, who owns the stand with her son, Skylar Smith. “It felt different.” On Tuesdays, hot dogs are 2 for 1. Best to pay attention to specials like the L.A. Dog: caramelized onions and peppers, crispy bacon bits, ketchup, and mustard. Speaking of different, Heibeck’s has some new stuff to help ease your quarantine gloom. Their small batch ice cream is available in DIY kits. Sauce or top each flavor as much as you desire. Topping choices range from chocolate crunchies and rainbow sprinkles to toasted coconut and Mini M&Ms. Your kit options will depend on how much of an ice cream fiend you are; two pints, four pints, or two quarts. Not new. Still satisfying. Taco trio of battered cod tacos with cilantro-lime slaw and creamy avocado salsa. Taco packs—that include chips and a pint of fresh slapped guac—are also available. Also new are various vegan ice cream flavors, rice bowls, and bake-at-home cookie dough. Additionally, being offered are various pantry items like tomatoes, gallon milk jugs, sugar, and all of Heibeck’s house made condiments. The “Heibeck Burger” (lettuce, tomato, pickles, and secret burger sauce) starts at 1/4 pound but depending how hungry you’re feeling, make it a 1/2 or 3/4 pound monster. While you can still walk up and order, Heibeck’s asks that you please PLACE ORDERS ONLINE or over the phone to help with social distancing. You’ll get a pickup time estimate and your order will be waiting on a table at the back-patio entrance. Heibeck’s Stand is on the up and up when it comes to updating customers on Instagram and Facebook, so stay tuned in regards to hours of operation, added safety guidelines, and food specials. And while we all eagerly await restrictions to ease or be fully lifted, a fresh beef burger, a lobster roll, and several scoops of ice cream are all still pretty damn good when enjoyed at home. 951 Danbury Road; Wilton(203) 917-9313; http://www.heibecksstand.com/ To order: https://heibecksstand.square.site/
