Kabab & Hummus House Opens in Southport with Focus on Egyptian and Moroccan Fare

As a resident of Westport and a lover of Mediterranean cuisine, I often notice the lack of such restaurants available in Fairfield County. Fortunately for you (and me), a great new spot just opened up, serving mainly Middle Eastern food, with a focus on Egyptian and Moroccan fare. Fairfield County, meet your new tasty resident: Kabab and Hummus House!

Yasser Khedewe opened Kabab & Hummus House in December of last year. With its prime location on Post Road in Southport, Yasser is excited about all of the food lovers he’ll meet, especially those that are new to this type of cuisine.

Yasser Khedewe’s occupation was originally that of a computer scientist, though he always had a deep passion for food and cooking. While he is originally from Egypt, Khedewe spent a favorable amount of time working and living in Dubai, which is primarily when his food journey began, as he loved cooking for his friends as a way to share his culture. He eventually moved to the United States in 2015 and then to Connecticut in 2016, where he gained culinary experience by working in restaurants and kitchens.

I was lucky enough to sit down for two hours and chat with Yasser and his good family friend, Amani, while they explained what made Egyptian and Middle Eastern food different from other Mediterranean cuisines. In short, it’s all about the spices! Yasser excitedly ran to the kitchen and returned with his own array of house-blended spices and let me smell each one, which only heightened my excitement to try his food. While the three of us chatted, I sampled the incredibly well-seasoned falafel, chicken and lamb kababs, and dipped the hot, homemade Israeli pita into the tahini, hummus, tzatziki, and baba ganoush. I also tried Koshari for the first time, which is Egypt’s national dish and consists of mixing pasta, rice, brown lentils, tomato sauce, chickpeas, and a topping of crispy fried onions. With this dish, I lost my constant battle of avoiding carbs, as it was unlike anything I’d ever tried. Amani, Yasser’s friend with whom I wound up sharing this food excursion with, stated: “Koshari is like your hot dog in New York City; you can get it on every corner.” If that’s the case, goodbye Nathan’s, hello Kashari. With each additional bite, it transported me to Yasser’s home in Egypt where he fell in love with the food his mom cooked and served him and his brothers. That is exactly the feeling you get in this cozy, warmly-decorated restaurant, like you’re among friends and family and everyone is excited to talk about food and how food is the center of life, no matter your culture or background.

Along with all of the delicious things I tried, Yasser has plenty of other exciting things on the menu, including a shawarma quesadilla, lamb burgers, a pomegranate feta salad, and plenty of vegetarian platters and possibilities. Yasser also has a wonderfully creative breakfast menu coming soon, with shakshuka, zaatar egg wraps, and Moroccan pancakes.

Yasser Khedewe has created something truly special with Kabab & Hummus House and is thrilled to welcome those both familiar and foreign to Egyptian cuisine and culture, as food is the ultimate connector and sharing a delicious meal together creates a bond for life.
