Joylark Kitchen to Host Vegan Dinner and Exclusive Screening of “A Culinary Uprising, The Story of Bloodroot”

On March 30, Joylark Kitchen in Fairfield, CT, will present a powerful evening celebrating plant-based cuisine, feminist history, and culinary legacy. The event begins with a thoughtfully curated three-course vegan dinner, followed by an exclusive screening of “A Culinary Uprising: The Story of Bloodroot,” the acclaimed documentary by Director/Producer Annie Laurie Medonis.

The film honors Bloodroot — the nation’s longest-running feminist, queer, vegan restaurant and bookstore — and the extraordinary women behind it, Selma Miriam and Noel Furie. Located in Bridgeport’s Black Rock neighborhood, Bloodroot served as a cultural and culinary landmark for 46 years before closing in October 2025, following the passing of Selma Miriam in February 2025.

More than a restaurant, Bloodroot was a movement. The documentary explores its profound influence on American feminist thought, LGBTQ+ visibility, and plant-based dining, while offering an intimate look at Selma and Noel’s decades-long partnership. Through archival footage and personal storytelling, audiences witness how the pair navigated sexism, homophobia, aging, and activism — all while building a beloved gathering space that nourished generations of feminists, vegans, artists, and changemakers.

Joylark Kitchen, which opened in November 2025, just minutes from Bloodroot’s former home, carries forward the spirit of thoughtful, community-centered plant-based dining. The March 30 event serves as both tribute and continuation — honoring Bloodroot’s legacy while celebrating the next chapter of conscious cuisine in Fairfield County.

The evening will conclude with a lively Q&A featuring Noel Furie and filmmaker Annie Laurie Medonis, offering guests an opportunity for deeper conversation and reflection.
