CTbites Readers Create New Pies for Pizzeria Rosso

Add this to the CTBites’ mantra - Sharing seven different and unique pizzas is a great way to spend an evening. 

Several of us performed the enviable task of judging six of the great pizza combinations that readers submitted to determine which would be included on the menu of Pizzeria Rosso’s new location in Greenwich and the combination that will earn the title of “CTBites 2012 Pie Combo.” And true to the mission of CTBites of guiding our readers to delicious food, all of them were so fantastic that Owner / Chef Pat Pascarella agreed that ALL OF THEM will be included on the Greenwich menu. 

So congratulations to each of these winning combinations: 

Sweet

Lynn - Thin layer of fig jam, brie, arugula with a drizzle of honey. Although this combination was chosen as a winner before the taste test, all of the judges really liked this dessert pie. One of the judges described this pie as the “illegitimate child of a fig newton and a pizza.”

Savory

Michael - White pie with prosciutto, ricotta, mozzarella, grilled onions and raw honey. 

Scott Brown - Red pizza with mozzarella, crumbled hot Italian sausage, banana peppers, black olives and mushrooms. 

Lisa - Red pizza with caramelized onions, goat cheese and sun-dried tomatoes. 

PL - Red pizza with lump sausage, broccoli rabe, pesto, halved grape tomatoes and Burrata. 

Denise - A thin layer of mashed potato (thinly sliced were used) topped with caramelized onions and pieces of tender Osso Bucco. 

But this is still a contest and we need to choose an overall winner for the title of “CTBites 2012 Pie Combo.” And true to the theory of refine and improve, after tasting these six delicious pizzas, Pat had a great idea to modify the “Osso Bucco” pizza. He prepared a seventh pizza and cracked three eggs on top and returned the pie to the oven. Each of us had already consumed six slices of deliciousness so now we needed to regroup for a seventh, and all of us were glad we did. This last pie was totally decadent and over the top delicious. Even Pizza purists like me are proud of this creation.
