Jasper White’s Summer Shack at Mohegan Sun

Sure, Connecticut is loaded with actual seafood shacks. But not one I know resembles what you’ll find in the cool, casual confines of the Mohegan Sun casino. In a summer that’s been off the charts hot and humid, retreating to Jasper White’s Summer Shack is pretty much just what the doctor ordered.

As we perused the menu, we tried not to finish the warm cornbread that came in our bread basket and failed.

Grilled clams casino were smoky, briny, and generously ladled with beurre blanc. With sautéed bell peppers, onions and bacon, these tender littlenecks were gone in the blink of an eye!

Tuna poke comes in a crispy wonton bowl. Avocado, cucumber, wakame and tobiko tossed with a wasabi aioli gave this dish a nice kick.

Juicy, sweet, buttery lobster is loaded into a grilled brioche bun. A cold version with tarragon mayo and cucumbers is also available. But we’re from Connecticut and certain traditions must be upheld! It was served with perfectly crisp-tender grilled asparagus. The lobster roll aficionado at the table was notably impressed.

And if you’re a scallop lover living in this area and have not had a Bomster scallop? You must remedy this, stat! These sweet little gems are a local seafood treasure and a must-try. I thoroughly enjoyed mine grilled, served with a generous side of creamy mashed potatoes. Not ordinarily one to go on about mashed potatoes, I must go on record here. These are mashed potatoes you wish you or a member of your family made—and probably none of them do. They were a perfect creamy accompaniment.

Have a drink or two. Cool as a cucumber, the cucumber margarita is, citrusy, oh so refreshing and not too sweet.

On the sweeter and fruitier side, the strawberry basil martini (above) goes down easy. And the mango margarita is made with freshly puréed mangoes.

Blueberry smash features Smirnoff Blueberry with St. Germain liqueur, muddled lime, lemon and mint and a splash of soda.

And to end on a sweet note, don’t pass on the crème brûlée. A classic study in dessert contrasts—smooth vanilla custard with a fine, crispy crunch, topped with fresh whipped cream. It was one of the best we’ve had. Now we just need an excuse to go back and do it again!
