Best_Coffee_Connecticut_2020.jpg

Those who know me, know I’m an equal opportunity caffeinator; I start my day low-key and sort of lady-like with a cup of Twinings Earl Grey. BUT, if I haven’t been punched in the face by mid-morning with a good strong cappuccino, then watch out. By the sheer number of places in our great state to get a jolt, I know I’m not alone. The list is long, but please, let us know if we’ve missed one of your favorite spot for java and we’ll add it to the caffeinated compilation. Go forth and get buzzed.

Inviting sounds of a steaming and hissing La Marzocco espresso machine, a vast array of house-made grab-and-go baked goods (including their famous cheddar chive biscuit with maple sausage and egg), and a gaggle of happy baristas behind a beautifully well-lit barnboard coffee counter populate the space. Ashlawn is always generously staffed, which means that the (often long) line is constantly moving. These guys are pioneers in forming relationships with local producer partners, and they were a first in the Connecticut cafe scene to use biodegradable and recyclable serving vessels. Always with an eye on the environment, they are about to convert their farm in Lyme to Solar electricity. Even in these days of Covid19, the provisions and adaptations Ashlawn has created a comfortable experience, with well-plotted distancing markers and plenty of safe

Definitely a place you want to linger, grab a fresh cup of coffee, a panini, or pastry; and sit back and watch the hustle and bustle of this must see local hub.

Bonjo Coffee Roasters: Stamford

BonJo Coffee Bar & Roasters is a jack of all trades. They serve as a retail establishment, they’re a distributor (to a few cafes on this list), they’re a roaster and a coffee bar. By design it is not a huge coffee spot, modeled like a European café. With a few stools facing the busy street, it’s a great spot for a quick stop during a busy day and cup of coffee. The other side serves as the commercial showroom offering equipment for local businesses/restaurants or home set-ups.

Honey Joe’s Family Coffeehouse: Stamford

Let’s play! Where else can you grab coffee and play? Well, maybe the play area is for kids, but how cool is that? The Springdale cafe proudly serves up Bonjo Coffee with a range of espresso drinks, drip coffee and locally sourced pastries.

Lorca Coffee Bar: Stamford

The OG. Lorca Coffee Bar opened in Stamford just shortly after we began ctbites and we’ve been a fan since day one.  Opened seven days a week with a patio to boot, the small shop also offers breakfast and lunch options on top of the best combo that got it all started: cortados and churros.

Pacific Cycling & Triathlon: Stamford

That’s right, it’s not just a bike shop. In late 2016, Pacific Cycling & Triathlon opened up a coffee shop! The original goal was to simply reach fellow cyclists, but also to serve as a gathering place for those seeking an alternative to the bigger chains in the high ridge neighborhood. The shop has a great vibe to it and is not just a cyclist hangout. Serving locally roasted Bonjo coffee, a wide selection of teas and a bountiful array of pastries includes a variety of croissants, scones, muffins and cookies.

The Granola Bar: Westport, Fairfield, Greenwich, Stamford

Tazza Cafe: Ridgefield

With spots in New York and in Ridgefield CT, Tazzo knows coffee, teas, and sammies. They also have a serious breakfast menu with smoothies and parfaits. I personally can't pass them by without grabbing a frozen hot chocolate.

Common Grounds: Branford, Hamden, and Shelton

With three locations, in Branford, Hamden, and Shelton, this “gathering place” takes coffee seriously and your first sip even more so. Offering the most global menu of roasts and blends I’ve seen, you could get your hands on Chocolate Marshmallow or Amaretto to Rice Crispy or Pumpkin.

Tusk & Cup Coffee: Wilton, Ridgefield

Definitely one of my top five on this list, I think my Euro ancestors would be pleased with this one. Cozy, artsy, and oh so Italian, Tusk & Cup is where I go when I’m dying for an espresso con panna or gelato. With locations in Wilton and Ridgefield, they also have cold brew, tons of teas, and sell creative crafts and gear.

Terrain Cafe: Westport

Close to the heart of the ctbites team, Terrain in Westport just always feels special. From bringing the outdoors in and the indoors out, you go to Terrain almost as much for the ambience and decor as you do the great treats and drinks. Everything they serve is done so thoughtfully and so beautifully, even a simple but delicious cup of coffee.

Ross Bread & Coffee: Ridgefield

I think Ross’ Sweet Earth bread has a cult-like following. I know I certainly keep my eye on their rotation. I’m also a sucker for their Avocado Toast frittata and that chunky cowboy cookie! Add a cappuccino and I’m golden. Break bread here and enjoy every crumb!

Raus Coffee: Online & Pop-Ups

Have you had the Cold Roman espresso? Like a dessert granita in liquid form, Raus knows espresso and the cold sort, which is so hard to get right. And, did you know that there’s a Connecticut Coffee Society? Well, now you do and Raus is the name behind it. I’d say they know coffee.

Rumors Coffeehouse: Danbury

Nearest and dearest to my heart, Rumors is LITERALLY my second home. I’m there just about everyday for my morning cappuccino or the occasional coconut matcha. I’m such a regular, the Lupo Shakerato is named after me! Very cozy, set in a little cottage off a main road, Mill Plain Ave in Danbury has a fun and funky selection of creative drinks and the staff have likely the most diverse range of coffee-centric T-shirts. To top it off, they serve CT’s own Saccuzzo coffee.

The 747: it has 7 shots of espresso, 4 shots of cream, and 7 teaspoons of sugar. What? No joke. Don’t worry, there are plenty of classics to calm your nerves.

Hartford Baking Company: West Hartford, Glastonbury

No strangers to this wonderful spot, we’re so happy to keep adding this CT staple to this chunky list of caffeination. Of course, breads and baked goods are the star here, and now celebrating a decade in the biz, they know what they’re doing. However, they haven’t forgotten what we want to wash that bread down with: Coffee. With a growing list of classic and clever brews, this is certainly a stop for quality everything. Now with three locations: two in West Hartford, and now in Glastonbury.

Tisane Euro Asian Cafe: West Hartford

What a treat! Hartford certainly has a way of promoting the beautiful collective of cultures our state represents. Here is one place that does that so well. And that is evident in everything from their selection of teas, foods, and of course, delicious coffees.

Middlesex County

Perkatory Coffee Roasters: Middletown, Southington

Definitely raised on punk and skateboarding, the vibe here is fabulously irreverent and cool. Was just there the other day for a quick double shot, which was the espresso punch in the face I told you that gets me going. The skeletal fella sitting at the counter may take you aback, but don’t worry, he’s actually friendly. In both Middletown and Southington.

Amidst a delicious bite or gulp of solid brew, you’ll find this spot a very friendly gathering place. As a matter of fact, that is a big part of their mission.
