Tümü Opens in Fairfield with Delicious Authentic Mexican Fare

Jessica Ryan

A couple of months ago, right before the holidays, I wandered into the newly opened Tümü in Fairfield in the Harry’s Corner shopping plaza.

Tümü, the Mexican word for butterfly, embodies the beauty and passion of Karla Krassin, a Weston-ite who was born and raised in Oaxaca, Mexico. The chef and caterer now has a storefront that is part home décor boutique and part takeout restaurant (although there are two tables if you chose to eat in). Through her food and stunning items made by Mexican artisans, she brings the flavors and colors of her homeland to us and in so doing she honors the true recipes and techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation. The items she showcases are those from traditional Mexican kitchens and homes – from tableware, to the authentic fabrics of the placemats, napkins, table cloths and blankets. Stunning clay pieces that are not only useful but truly works of art. In bringing these stunning products to us, she’s helping to support the artisans of her hometown.

I hadn’t yet had lunch and decided to pick something up to bring home – after much deliberation I opted to have the Hongos Y Frijoles torta, a wonderfully aromatic sautéed mushrooms with onion, thyme and garlic as a torta – or sandwich. My only regret was jumping on a phone call so I had to hold off on eating it which led the bread to getting a bit soggy. The sandwich was still delicious, and I knew I had to return to try more. When I did I had Stephanie join me.

To start we tried Corn in two different ways – the first, a typical street corn with its spices and cheese and the other, off the cob, served in an incredible broth, soup-like, that was unlike anything I had ever had before. It’s soup season so why not try the Beef and Vegetable soup?
Perfect for a chilly day, this broth was rich with had an intensely beefy flavor with large chunks of zucchini, potatoes, and pieces of corn right on the cob as well as tender bites of beef.

Next the Quesa Birria (made from “Martha’s special recipe”) was delicious. The flavors derived from the long, slow cooking process were exceptional and the beef was cooked to perfection.  The accompanying pico de gallo was vibrant and refreshing. This was truly love at first bite. We also enjoyed The Enchiladas Verdes with Mexican Red Rice which was pure comfort. I do crave my veggies and vegetarians will be delighted to learn that there are a slew of vegetarian and quite a few vegan options as well. Karla not only shares the recipes of her homeland but offers us authentic Mexican cuisine. This, friends, from the ingredients to the preparation to the delivery, is the real deal.

Tümü is truly a passion project. Each menu item has been carefully and meticulously created and crafted by both Karla and her aunt who works closely with her in the kitchen. Karla is passionate about sharing Oaxacan cuisine with us – the true flavors with all their intricate spices as she experiences them in Mexico. With us she shares a divine, fresh culinary experience.

“In Mexico,” she shares with us, “each event or celebration is always accompanied by two things: good food and good friends. Every meal becomes a whole experience. Tümü will be the connection between these experiences and whoever decides to get to know a little more about the authentic Mexico.”

Karla has just added a breakfast menu that she’s offering on Saturdays. She’s now offering Chilaquiles, Burritos with egg and chorizo, Corn Pancakes with piloncillo butter and Huevos Rancheros.

Can’t make it for breakfast or lunch? There `is a slew of prepared family meals to go. All you need to do is reheat and set the table. Options include: Mexican Lasagna in chicken and vegetarian options, Cheese Chile Rellenos with zucchini and rice, Chipotle Meatballs with zucchini and rice, Roasted Chicken with garlic and broccoli, Green and Vegan Enchiladas, Chorizo and Zucchini quiche, Meatball and Veggie soup, Beef Empanadas and Poblano and Corn Empanadas

Although the restaurant does have seating, it is very limited.
