Tim Cabral & Avi Szapiro Opening Gioia Restaurant & Market In New Haven

James Gribbon

Long-time New Haven restaurateurs Tim Cabral (Ordinary) and Avi Szapiro have worked with contracting partners Anthony and Gerard Bianco to breathe new life into the former Tony & Lucille's at 150 Wooster Street. Gioia ("Joy" in Italian) should spark plenty, with a wood-fired grill and rotisserie, Italian grocery, full bar, gelato stop, and a rooftop deck.

The process of restoring the venerable neighborhood mainstay began last year with a complete redesign which retains some of the original cues, such as mural work by Jamie La Jones. The menu will focus on interpretations of Italian classics, according to early information, alongside sharable, house-made pasta, pizza, and a wine, beer, and cocktail program (that last catching particular attention, considering Ordinary's multiple award-winning program), inspired by Italian tradition.

“We are thrilled to be opening our new venture in such an historic part of New Haven and are appreciative of the warm welcome the neighborhood has given us,” said Cabral.  “Our goal is to create a welcoming space that the community can enjoy, whether it’s couples out for date night at the rooftop, a group of friends celebrating a birthday in the restaurant or families grabbing a gelato."

The market concept's Italian provisions will include house-made pasta and sauces to cook at home, prepared grab-and-go items, artisanal serving ware, and other everyday items as a convenience for those living in the neighborhood or coming in from out of town. With its own dedicated entrance, the market will also be available in the evening for special events, offering a private dining area with a communal table.

Opening in phase two, the three-season rooftop will have its own, dedicated seasonal food and beverage menus inviting guests to experience a unique space in the neighborhood for a meal or to grab drinks overlooking the thrum of activity on New Haven's most well-known street. The gelataria with a streetside window will also open in phase two later this year.
