Arby's Is Releasing Two French Fry-Flavored Vodkas...Available in CT

CTbites Team

Food & Wine reported on this exciting French Fry news. Here is an excerpt. Read the complete article here.

Earlier this year, the meats-centric sandwich chain expanded its French fry options by adding crinkle-cut fries alongside their usual curly fries. Now, to hammer home their two fry options, Arby's will be releasing two limited-edition vodkas: Arby's Curly Fry Vodka and Arby's Crinkle Fry Vodka.

The Curly Fry Vodka is billed as "a tribute to the mastery of crisp, spiced, curled potato," distilled with cayenne, paprika, onion, and garlic for a spirit that "preserves the distinctive and authentic tasting notes of the traditional Arby's Curly Fry. " Meanwhile, the Crinkle Fry Vodka is made with kosher salt and sugar to honor "the rich tradition of salted potato shapes."

There are cake people and there are pie people, but when it comes to holidays, Thanksgiving is all about the pie. A slice of this, a slice of that, they are hard to resist. We won’t even go into the fact that pie for breakfast the day after a holiday quite possibly takes, well, the cake. Whether you are a traditionalist or a try-new-things-ist at your holiday table, we have the pie for you. Or at least, these delightful vendors do. Happy Thanksgiving and forks up, people!

Bring on the good food, the gratitude, and the tablecloth you use once a year-Thanksgiving is here! This holiday, thankfully, will be more about in-person celebrating than seeing how many Zoom family chats we can schedule between the appetizer course and the dessert course. Man, doesn’t it feel good to greet a holiday with thoughts of “looking forward to this!” rather than “how the heck are we going to do this?”. To that end, one of your biggest challenges this month will be which of these wonderful establishments to order your food from and you will win no matter who you choose. From turkeys and pies you can bake yourself so they are bubbly warm when you serve them, to vegan and gluten-free options and dine-in options across the state, bellies will be full and happy. You can even send a meal to a loved one or donate one to spread the love. Oh, and make sure to scroll all the way to the bottom of the list, where you will find places to order fresh turkeys. Eat up, celebrate well. Psst-We’d be remiss if we didn’t tell you that we are grateful for our fabulous readers. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

The Wheel Debuts Sunday Jazz Brunch at The Village in Stamford

Features Restaurant The Village Stamford Stamford brunch Homepage Breakfast Lunch

Andrew Dominick

When we introduced our readers to The Village in the summer of 2021, we knew we’d be back relatively soon thereafter. No, it’s not to talk about beer and smash burgers at Cisco Brewers. It has nothing to do with the special pop-up dinners you may have peeped on Instagram.

This brief sequel takes us back to The Wheel where they’ve just begun wheeling out Sunday brunch service. Brunch here is short, only from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., with a small, breakfasty menu. Some of it is salty, some is sweet, and there’s lots of yolky goodness to be had.

But who hits up brunch without booze? And in the case of The Wheel…tunes. Drink beer, or wine, and they’ll allow you to order a cocktail from their afternoon menu (I had a Sazerac after my White Russian), but the focus here is light and bubbly or bloody. Refreshing mimosas and bellinis are available by the glass but where’s the fun in that? The Wheel has an option where brunchers can choose their sparkling wine, then fresh squeezed fruit juice mixers, and even ginger, crème de menthe, or Aperol. It arrives at your table in a wooden serving tray, DIY style. Mix and drink.

Bloodies—in Mary form (with vodka) or the tequila-based Maria—are also a brunch staple at The Wheel, as are Cisco beers, other local craft selections, and a boozy milkshake-like White Russian, blended in part with Stamford-based Rise Oat Milk Vanilla Coffee.

While you sip, enjoy the tunes. This is a jazz brunch after all. Most often you’ll catch local musicians or bands that are brought in by Greenwich resident Pete Francis of Dispatch fame. On the off chance that Pete is hanging out, expect him to join in on a few sets.

By now you should have figured out what you’re brunching on besides alcohol.

Like I mentioned earlier, The Wheel’s Sunday Funday menu is succinct. If you’ve been before, you’ll notice a trio of the restaurant’s dinnertime staples offered at brunch, namely the locally sourced Lioni burrata with strawberries and basil, tuna tartare, their big, beefy burger, and a lobster roll.

More morning appropriate fare appears like a shareable buttermilk banana bread—seriously, try it. I don’t even get down with banana bread like that. This one isn’t dry, the banana isn’t too…banana-y. It’s made with love, and whipped butter to spread all over it doesn’t hurt either. Other starters are fire bread with hot honey and whipped ricotta, a lox plate with bagel chips and proper accompaniments, and a not so shareable yogurt parfait.

Siena Ristorante Opens Second Location at Hotel Zero Degrees in Norwalk

Andrew Dominick

The vacancy left by Mediterraneo at Norwalk’s branch of Hotel Zero Degrees has a new occupant.

Siena Ristorante—owned by Pasquale Conte, Pietro Polini, along with new partners in executive chef Foster Lukas and general manager and longtime bartender Jonathan Rodriguez—have been open since early September serving upscale Northern Italian food that the restaurant has dished out in Stamford for about 25 years.

But Stamford residents, fear not, they didn’t move. This is simply a sequel location.

Rodriguez, who you might know from his six-year stint as Mecha Noodle Bar’s beverage directory, clued us in on how it all came together. “Pasquale and Pietro are friends of the owners of the hotel, so they were able to strike a deal and it made sense,” he says. “Foster was the former chef at East End in Greenwich (there’s a close relationship between Hotel Zero Degrees and Z Hospitality Group’s restaurants), so he came on, and I did a small, maybe 8-10 drink program at Siena Stamford, so they approached me about wanting to bring me on as a partner.”

If you aren’t familiar with what to expect from this 130-seat hotel restaurant that provides Silvermine River views, think along the lines of old school Italian marries Tuscan fine dining. The menu can go from light—with a colorful roasted beet salad atop whipped ricotta with salty, chopped pistachios and a beet greens pesto—to soulful and hearty with meatballs, fritti misti (deep fried calamari, eggplant, zucchini, and hot peppers), and a crostini trio that doesn’t skimp on toppings.

There’s pizza, too, and don’t call it Neapolitan. According to Lukas, it’s “artisan.”

“It’s the pizza that I wanted when I moved to Connecticut from New York,” he says. “It’s half 00 flour and half all-purpose, salt, yeast, and a touch of olive oil. It’s fermented for minimum 24 hours but up to two days. We cook it in a combi oven (gas and wood) for some wood flavor. It’s crisp, light, and has no flop.”

The rest of Siena’s menu is chock full of pasta dishes. No, that doesn’t mean spaghetti and meatballs. These carbs include truffle and wild mushroom tagliatelle, duck ragu bucatini, kale and ricotta ravioli with vodka sauce, sweet corn and butter poached lobster risotto, and red wine braised oxtail rigatoni.

“What we’re trying to do it take a Tuscan-inspired restaurant known for years for having good food, where pasta is made in-house, using ingredients you can recognize, that’s as local as possible,” Rodriguez says.

The rest of Siena’s offerings include seafood like wood-fired whole branzino, shrimp and cockles with white bean and broccoli rabe ragout, and grilled salmon. Some of its meatier fare is a wood-fired half chicken, a classic in either veal or chicken Milanese, a grilled Berkshire porkchop with peach mostarda, and your choice of steak with options being a porcini rubbed NY strip or a dry-aged bone-in ribeye. Each steak is accompanied by a stack of parmesan polenta “fries,” sautéed spinach, and a gravy boat full of sweet balsamic shallot sauce.

Bruno. Joe Bruno. AKA Joe. Bold. Intense. Irreverent. Stubbornly set in his ways, yet with the naive audacity of a young teenager. Joe Bruno cares about one thing only: perfecting his art. A perfectionist in an imperfect world.

Everything else is just show, point of view, shock and awe. “I’m not a chef,” he once said to me, “but I know that I have to recreate a dish exactly as I made for you the first time.” Right? Exacting execution— that’s what we grew to expect and that’s what we were given, night after night after night.

He was 35 when he opened Pasta Nostra. It was never meant to be a restaurant. “I wanted to sell pasta. I made a few dishes to showcase my pasta and the next thing you know it’s a restaurant.”

Hindsight BBQ: Must Eat BBQ in Waterbury

Features Interview Restaurant Waterbury BBQ Hindsight BBQ Homepage Lunch Catering Comfort Food Openings

Andrew Dominick

When you pull up to Hindsight BBQ, it looks like a barbecue joint. Forget the fact that you can smell the smoke off the wood for miles or the sight of a packed patio area of carnivorous customers smacking their lips on ribs, wings, and definitely the brisket. You might even forget you’re in Waterbury. The setup of picnic tables, greenery and flowers, fire pits, an outdoor bar, and massive smokers all make you feel like you’re about to eat BBQ in a setting reminiscent of the south.

The man behind Hindsight is Jeff Schmidt. And he wants you to feel like you’re at a BBQ restaurant.

Schmidt is a self-proclaimed “restaurant baby.” His mom, Jayne Lamphear along with stepfather Red, own At The Corner in Litchfield and Black Rock Tavern in Thomaston. Schmidt has general managed at both, including a decade long stint after his family opened At The Corner.

Schmidt first got into the BBQ game as a hobby, but it quickly progressed into a pop-up. “I started doing it at Black Rock Tavern some weekends and,” he says. “COVID happened and I wanted to do new, so I did BBQ every weekend and that turned into every day. I even did pop-ups for brewery owners at Kent Falls, Tribus, Counter Weight, and Fox Farm. As the pandemic became more manageable, I said to myself, ‘I don’t want to stop doing this.’”

So he didn’t.

The pandemic, Schmidt told us, was a good opportunity to take the leap to do something that was solely his restaurant baby, so he found a space. “This place maybe would not have been available if not for the pandemic,” he says as he begins to laugh. “It was a diner years ago, then it was a place where you could come and have a drink with hot models! It wasn’t a strip joint, but it basically was! It was painted hot pink inside with black ceilings.”

Of course, like any BBQ enthusiast, and believe this, Schmidt is uber nerdy about the ‘cue craft, he continued his education with a trip down south. He spent time in Texas (one being LeRoy & Lewis BBQ in Austin), Georgia, and other states expanding his knowledge and learning from guys ingrained in the BBQ scene so he could bring elements back to Waterbury with him.

So, what’s Schmidt’s BBQ style at Hindsight? There isn’t one.

Mazzella strove for this constant improvement throughout his baking journey, always moving up, always seeking to work in places where he could learn more high-level skills. If you don’t know Dave Kuban from Dave’s Planet Pizza, you really should go introduce yourself. Sure, he runs Planet Pizza’s highly successful Norwalk location, but this restaurateur offers so much more to the Norwalk community beyond pizza and oversized grinders. Dave is the guy who will unfailingly step up to help his neighbors or support a local fundraising effort. Whether he rolls in with his pizza truck to raise money for a family whose house has burned down overnight, or is feeding the homeless in the midst of Covid, he has been there for Norwalk for 30 years, and continues to be an anchor with his mobile pizza truck and storefront.

Now, Kuban has a new project underway, and again, he has stepping up to support Norwalk. Kuban and his brother in law have taken over Marinelli’s deli in the town’s Strawberry Hill neighborhood. Marinelli’s was an institution, serving Norwalk for over 70 years, and locals were devastated to see it shut its doors in the midst of the pandemic. Kuban is taking the reins to preserve the heritage and community spirit that Marinelli’s had embodied.

jjStacks: Burgers, Fries, Shakes, Local Beer, + Mini Golf in Brookfield

Restaurant Features Burgers sandwiches ice cream Brookfield homepage Homepage

Andrew Dominick

Joe Attonito has his second act as a restaurant owner. In fact, he’s officially over a year into his next phase at jjStacks, where double cheeseburgers, hulking hot dogs, fresh cut fries, shakes, and other sandwiches are the focus.

If Attonito sounds familiar, you’re not imagining it. He owned the sports bar, Tiger’s Den, just off Ridgefield’s Main Street for 3 ½ years. “I was looking to get out of the industry,” Attonito says. “While attempting to transition out, I went to work for Jeff Taibe at Taproot, then I got into food sales at PFG (Performance Food Group). I wanted to get back in, so I started looking into getting a food truck.”

Attonito found a truck with the right price tag attached to it but his business partner at the time didn’t want the venture to be mobile. “I didn’t want to do a brick-and-mortar because I know what it takes; you gotta be there every day,” he says. “My partner told me to go look at the old Campy’s Cookout on Federal Road and to let him know what I thought. I saw the place, the property, the deck, the mini golf, and said to myself ‘Oh, man. This is perfect.’ I called the landlord hoping the rent would be too much and it’ll be crazy, and easy to say no. He was so friendly, accommodating, and the price was right.”

And just like that, from sports bar to a few stops in between, Attonito was back operating a sort of sportsy location, if you consider mini golf a sport.

jjStacks officially opened on August 23, 2020, a scary time to open a spot smack dab in a pandemic, according to Attonito, but he knew he had lots of outdoor seating on the side deck if people felt uncomfortable dining in.

The vibe at Stacks, though, is anything but uncomfortable. It’s a family friendly roadside joint with double stack burgers as its star and plenty of guilty pleasure grub.

Past patrons of Tiger’s Den will recognize his crispy, meaty chicken wings with a plethora of classic and creative sauces to choose from, and occasionally you’ll come across a Den special like mac & cheese, but with a jjStacks spin on it, like “Big Stack Mac” with chopped ground beef, bacon, and burger sauce.
